Wu Xiaodong: The Chinese paint market is developing very rapidly, and it is now in the phase of integration. Two years ago, it was said that there were more than 20,000 companies in the Chinese paint industry, but only more than 8,000 are left according to the statistics of the Paint Industry Association. We have seen many examples in other industries where integration is good. Integration happens while Chinese companies grow. Only companies that hope to become leading companies can have a chance to compete in the international market. Large companies have better systems, higher corporate standards, ISO-certification, talents reserves, and high quality products. Not only are the multinational paint companies doing very well in China, the major local companies also have high market visibility and shares. Demand for the paint industry has increased; paint products are required to have higher performance and be more environmentally friendly and greener while solvent-based products are being increasingly controlled to meet VOC requirements. In terms of color, there are increasingly high demands from customers. In the past, building colors could remain the same but now, with growing individualism, there are more and more requirements for color changes.
In the current development of the paint market, there are indeed some factors that influence the healthy development of the industry, such as price competition. We do not advocate vicious price competition, because product quality cannot improve if there are insufficient funds. Compromising on quality of materials will result in inferior products which could produce harmful side effects for consumers. As an old saying goes “killing the goose that lays the golden eggs”, these unscrupulous methods will only accelerate the vicious circle. We must have a long-term method of competition.
